HINTS for Floateye

This brief file outlines some hints and tips for Floateye that I use to advance. I and others have descended, but it takes some doing =)

  • Try to remember that your goal isn't to kill everything, but to descend in such a way that you don't die.
  • Try to figure out what to kill for the best experience. For instance, George W. Bushes take a lot of hits, run fast, and are generally hard to kill. They give 300 points. Peons, on the other hand, are a gift and are worth a whopping 500 points. Likewise, at earlier levels, you may find it useful to try hunting the green Fungus and Garden or Flying Gnomes.
  • Sometimes, it's just better to avoid enemies and keep moving until you can get some easier experience. Don't waste your ammo on lumbering oddities like Gnome Kings who normally just aren't worth killing.
  • You get points for every enemy killed, even if you didn't kill it yourself. So lead enemies into traps as often as the opportunity arises.
  • Be especially careful of Alien Blood, which moves quickly, doesn't show up on your telepathy, and can kill you in one hit if you're at a low level or have low HP.
  • Also be careful of Weapons Grade Plutonium Spheres, which tend to explode unpredictably, and do significant damage over a very large radius. If possible, stay far away from them.
  • When you get to lower levels, try to avoid letting Blademasters get in close on you. This is how I usually die.
  • Use your spells wisely! Sometimes, it's better to use speed than to heal when you are low on HP.
  • Don't allow yourself to get cornered. Being in a corner can be good protection from annoying long-ranged attackers like George W. Bushes, but tends to leave you with few options for escaping close-ranged ones. Also, some dangerous enemies (Alien Blood) tend to run along the walls, which means you don't want to be there.
  • Don't forget you can ascend if you need to, which can be useful for recharging/healing when you are first descending a new level. But don't get knocked away from the tunnel!
  • Don't forget you can use SHIFT to strafe. Useful for firefights. There is no speed-penalty for strafing.
  • Also remember your leg-shots travel a lot farther than you can see.
  • Alas poor mercutio, don't feel bad. After all it is based largely on luck!
